I knew Aldo for more than 30 years,and during all that time I always looked forward to our often 12-hour conversations about the ways of the world. No one made me question my own opinions and assumptions with more perception than Aldo. He knew far more history than I do, even though I taught history for decades. He used his intelligence to think -- about almost everything, and his well-reasoned moral outrage never succumbed to lazy cynicism. Any form of intellectual laziness, such as "chaos theory," offended him,but he held particular disdain for the many forms of chauvinism/tribalism/ghettoism that respectable, to which on-the-make so-called intellectual so often descend. There were no compromises in his life or of his principles. He was a true aristocrat -- someone who cared about ideas, not status or things. Most important, to me, is that he made me think, and as I often said when leaving his apartment, 'Thinking is the most fun you can have with your clothes on." He was unique, one of the most intelligent people I ever knew, and I will continue to treasure the memory of our conversations and Aldo's wide-ranging intellectual curiosity, worldliness, and knowledge.
