Understanding Prearranged Cremation

There are 3 categories of decisions you’ll need to make when prearranging cremation.

Choosing Services

There are 3 standard options for services and you can have any or all of these:

  1. Funeral service before the cremation occurs – This would typically be a traditional setting with the casket present.
  2. Memorial service after the cremation occurs – This can be structured similarly to a traditional funeral service with the urn in place of the casket, or can be done in a more creative way, such as the increasingly popular celebration of life.
  3. Interment ceremony – If you’re planning to inter the ashes in a cemetery, it is common to have a ceremony at the cemetery as well.

What to Do with the Ashes

There are a number of options for the cremation ashes and many people have specific ideas about where they want their remains to go.

  1. As mentioned above, cemeteries offer a number of options for the interment of cremated remains. Learn more about different cemetery interment options here.
  2. Ashes can also be scattered in a number of ways but there are some legal restrictions to consider. Read about ash scattering ceremony ideas and how to scatter ashes here.
  3. Ashes can be kept by family and friends in an urn. If you have a specific request in regards to who will keep the urn, we recommend that you discuss your decision with them in addition to adding it to your preplan.

Funeral Products to Choose

Depending on the service choices, there are different products you’ll need to choose from.

  1. A casket is required if you’re planning to have a traditional funeral service. You can choose a cremation casket useful for both the service and the cremation itself or you can choose to rent a casket that will hold a simpler cremation container inside.
  2. In addition to urns, there are a number of containers to choose from, depending on what you want done with the ashes. We offer specific containers for scattering, others that stand the test of time for interment in a cemetery and even some that are tasteful centerpieces that can be stored in a place of honor in the home.
  3. If you’re planning to use a cemetery plot, you’ll want to consider an urn vault to protect not only the urn, but the integrity of the grave as well as a headstone or grave marker. If you’ve chosen a specific cemetery, call them to get the details on what you’ll need for urn burial.
