As more and more people choose to be cremated (by 2020 it is predicted that 54% of people will choose cremation!), families are looking for distinct and personalized ideas to memorialize their loved one. Many traditional options are available, but many out-of-the-box ideas are starting to pop up as well. Here we’ll look at 6 options for what to do with cremated remains, starting with more traditional options and building up to the more unique. This list is by no means exhaustive of the options available, but we hope that it provides some ideas and gets you thinking about the personal and special ways to memorialize your loved one’s cremated remains.

Ash Scattering

Often times a location that is meaningful to is chosen as the scattering location. Ashes can be scattered in a traditional committal-style ceremony, or in a private setting. Our website offers some ideas on how to scatter ashes that you may find helpful. Some families choose to scatter in specific, meaningful locations, such as scattering ashes in a garden or on family land, however it is encouraged that you gain permission from the landowner or governing agency if it is on private or public property. The Department of State offers information on scattering cremated remains in New York State.

Memorial Jewelry

Cremated Ashes Planted as a Tree or Flower

The urn can be planted in a meaningful spot and visited by family and friends for years to come.

Take a trip

As a Fireworks Display

As Celebration of Life and memorial services become more popular, a fireworks display can be a great way to say goodbye in a big way. By mixing cremated ashes in fireworks you can arguably create the biggest and most beautiful ash scattering ceremony possible.

Memorial Tattoo

Getting a tattoo in memory of a loved one has long been a popular memorialization option. To take this notion even further, a cremation tattoo is when you mix a small portion of cremated ashes into tattoo ink. Not for the faint of heart, this memorial tattoo idea is definitely more out of the box!
